The Rolex Datejust

Launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. The Cyclops lens over the date followed in the 1950s, and the Jubilee bracelet was designed for it. Eight decades on it is still the most versatile watch Rolex makes: as comfortable with a suit as it is at the weekend, and offered in more sizes, metals and dials than any other model.

On the pre-owned market the 36mm case is the classic choice. Steel references such as the 16234 pair an Oystersteel case with a white gold fluted bezel, while two-tone Rolesor models like the 16013 and 16233 combine steel with yellow gold. The 16013 dates from the late 1970s and 1980s and was among the first Datejusts with a quickset date; the 16233 and 16234 use the later calibre 3135. For a smaller wrist, the Lady-Datejust in 26mm and 28mm offers the same design in a more delicate case.
